I wanted to share this story about Carrie Fisher since we very sadly just lost her. She was a lovely person who I admired. I had a chance to meet Carrie this October 2016 at Comic Con. I made her a box out of German quilted/flamed maple and rare East-Indian rosewood. When Carrie saw the box she was immediately thrilled and said, “Jesus!! Nobody makes me anything at Comic Con.” Then she leaned over towards me, and kissed me on the lips! Being a kid from the 80’s every boy’s dream was to kiss Princess Leia and I did. When Carrie opened the box she saw the hand embroidered handkerchiefs my Mom made on Irish linen and she loved them. She then addressed in the autograph picture a personal note about the handkerchiefs to my Mom, Lucille. It was such a fun and eventful day and I am saddened by her passing. She was very kind and gracious to us and even commented that my wife Laura looked beautiful. I chose to make her a rose because it’s a symbol of love, passion and beauty and to me that is everything she embodies as an actor and person. On the top of the box I made an elevated black phenolic platform with a paua abalone layer. The center of the platform is a carved abalone rose that spins on a strong stainless steel rod. The spinning rose is translucent-like and reflects light onto the box top. I wanted to have it spin to see the details on both sides of the rose since it was made by hand it had variations to it. We’ve lost an American treasure with the passing of the iconic Carrie Fisher.
