Take a look at our longtime friend musician Alan Warshak‘s vintage Martin D-35 acoustic guitar finish restoration. Overtime the old lacquer on vintage instruments admits gases and causes the finish to melt or in this case soften. The case fabric plays a role in this chemical reaction as well. In the before and after pics I had to delicately buff by hand the entire guitar to remove the fog and imprinted patterns from the case fabric on the back of the guitar. Buffing it by hand is always the safest way so you don’t burn through the old finish. The headstock needed extra attention and I carefully buffed around the Martin logo without touching it.
